By Olawale Daniel

Using a combination of the biblical text and an ancient Egyptian text, the researchers were then able to refine the dates of the Egyptian pharaohs, in particular the dates of the reign of Ramesses the Great. The results are published in the Royal Astronomical Society journal Astronomy & Geophysics. The biblical text in question comes from the Old Testament book of Joshua and has puzzled biblical scholars for centuries. It records that after Joshua led the people of Israel into Canaan -- a region of the ancient Near East that covered modern-day Israel and Palestine -- he prayed: "Sun, stand still at Gibeon, and Moon, in the Valley of Aijalon. And the Sun stood still, and the Moon stopped, until the nation took vengeance on their enemies." "Modern English translations, which follow the King James translation of 1611, usually interpret this text to mean that the sun and moon stopped moving," said Humphreys, who is also a Fellow of Selwyn College. "But going ...

History of Easter

By Olawale Daniel
Image
Easter, also called Pascha or Resurrection Sunday, is a festival and holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, described in the New Testament as having occurred on the third day of his burial after his crucifixion by the Romans at Calvary c. 30 AD.It is the culmination of the Passion of Jesus, preceded by Lent (or Great Lent), a forty-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance. Most Christians refer to the week before Easter as "Holy Week".It contains the days of the Easter Triduum, including Maundy Thursday, commemorating the Maundy and Last Supper, as well as Good Friday, commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus. In Western Christianity, Eastertide, or the Easter Season, begins on Easter Sunday and lasts seven weeks, ending with the coming of the fiftieth day, Pentecost Sunday. In Eastern Christianity, the season of Pascha begins on Pascha and ends with th...

1.  A breakthrough study from the Institute of Crystallography in Italy has just confirmed that the image of the man on the Shroud of Turin is composed of real blood and in fact a microscopic analysis of blood particles reveals that the blood had to come from someone undergoing torture.  This just further confirms the possible authenticity of the Shroud  2.  Using a recently developed X-ray imaging technology, archaeologists were able to read the inside of a biblical scroll that was in such fragile condition that it could not be unrolled.  The results?  The current manuscripts we have of the book of Leviticus haven't changed in 2,000 years.  The Bible has been unaltered. 3.  Archaeologists have just discovered the location of the fishing village on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee where the Apostles Peter, Andrew, and Philip lived.  A bathhouse was unearthed, as well as the remains of an ancient church that sat over the apost...

LETTER TO THE YOUTH

Use Your Degree Well Otherwise You Will Die Poor Most of the educated people in Nigeria are poor. Majority of the educated earn less than N55,000 for a salary before tax and other deductions. When the deductions are put into consideration, the net salary comes to around N50,000. The net salary then suffers from loan deductions of up to N15,000 leaving the salary at around N35,000. The landlord then demands for his N15,000 and monthly shopping takes away N10,000 leaving one with a N10,000. The bus will demand for N300 going to and from work and relatives get another N2,500. The whole salary is gone and borrowed money starts operating. The borrowed money includes short loans and salary advances. The difference between poverty and prosperity is property. A prosperous person has property to his name while a poverty stricken person has no property to show. Using this understanding, therefore, most of the degree holders are poverty stricken, borrowing money to buy chicken and chips, pizz...

Entrepreneurial Lessons from Billy Graham

By Olawale Daniel
Image
The recent passing of Billy Graham has prompted countless tributes from religious and political leaders around the world. He was truly one of a kind, and I doubt we will see another religious figure like him. But now that I am in another life, building a business and figuring out the path of an entrepreneur, I’m experiencing his influence again. Dr. Graham wasn’t just a preacher or an evangelist. He was a brilliant entrepreneur. He founded the most successful crusade ministry in history, but he also started schools, magazines, retreat centers, and media companies. When someone says the name “Billy Graham,” a picture of the ultimate preacher and evangelist is usually what comes to mind. While that is obviously what his main claim to fame was, I believe it sells Billy Graham short. He was a preacher first and foremost, but it was his incredible entrepreneurial spirit that allowed him to operate in the size, scope, and longevity that he did. I’ve been reflecting on the lessons he has t...

Your  Excellency Muhamadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; Senator Bukola Saraki, Senate President; Honorable Yakubu Dogara, Speaker of the House; Your Excellencies, executive governors of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; Royal fathers; Distinguished ladies and gentlemen. And as you say in Nigeria, all other protocols observed. Thank you for welcoming me to Nigeria. I've been coming here regularly since 2006, and I've always felt welcome. Nigerians usually greet me warmly. The first time I met the Sultan of Sokoto, I was honored that he greeted me with the gift of a white horse. At some point during every visit, though, some brave person eventually asks me—very politely—"Why are you actually here?" It's an understandable question. Most American technology guys don't wander around Nigeria learning about its health system. But I think I have a good answer. Whe...
